Lash Extensions 101: Cost, Benefits, Styles, And More

Lash Extensions 101

Lash extensions are one beauty trick that everyone seems to want these days. Studios dedicated solely to lashes are popping up all over the country, the same way nail salons did back in the day. And there’s a good reason for it—lash extensions can transform your entire appearance.

If you’ve been using mascara for years, you’ve probably noticed that, although it does come in handy in a pinch and can easily fit into your purse, mascara has its own downsides. Mascara can gunk up, smear, run if you have an emotional day, or be impossible to take off. Plus, you have to reapply it every time! And don’t even get the world started on eyelash curlers—if you don’t know how to use them properly (ouch!). But lash extensions wipe all of these issues away.

Are you curious about getting your own lash extensions? Here is a small Lash Extensions 101 lesson with some of the most important things you need to know.

Lash Extensions Take A Moment To Adjust To

You’ve had your lashes your entire life so it will take a minute to adjust to lash extensions. You should prepare yourself to feel a bit of a weight adjustment on your eyes as your eyes get used to them—they will feel heavy at first. But don’t worry, it’s nothing you won’t get used to in a matter of days.

If You Get Them Done At A Salon, It Might Take Some Time

Your lash extension visit can take anywhere from one and a half to two hours of time. And it’s not your ordinary salon visit, where you can move around a bit and read in that time. Eyelash extensions require your eyes to be fully shut, the entire time (they are working on your eyes, after all). This is true whether it’s your first visit or you are going for a refill. To stay awake but also calm during this process, listen to an audiobook or try a meditation app.

Extensions Last Anywhere From One To Two Months

Lash extensions are time-consuming to apply for a reason—they’re put on so that they last one to two whole months and cannot be taken off. So while it is time-consuming and the heaviness is an adjustment your new breathtaking look is worth it in the end.

Having Them Professionally Done Has Its Perks, But It’s Also Pricey

Having your lash extensions done professionally will cost you, approximately, $100 to $300 dollars, each session. But as pricey as it may be, getting lash extensions professionally done can save you a ton of time and worry. Check if the salon is certified and up to state standards. The last thing you want is a messed up lash extension because the price [seemed] right, or you went for the cheap option, and your eyes suffer as a result. Along with the price tag comes a process that is clean, up to date, and up to code.

They Come In Different Materials

Lash extension materials come in several different materials—silk, faux mink, mink, sable, fox, or synthetic—so you should choose the best one for your look, budget, and potential allergies. The most expensive is mink and it dwindles down to synthetic being the least expensive. Silk lashes tend to be the heaviest option but are also the most noticeable for those special occasions.

There’s More To It Than Just Black

If you’re fair-skinned don’t worry. Just like hair dyes and wigs, lash extensions come in different colors for each individual.

They Require Frequent Care

After the initial application lashes can get wet (the recommended wait time is usually 24 hours). But be careful with how you care for your lashes because too much moisture will play with the adhesive. That means your skincare routine will need to be adjusted. You should maintain a consistent and frequent lash extension cleaning schedule so that your eyes don’t become infected or swollen through bacteria that can cause itching or irritation. And, just like hair, you’ll need to brush them from time to time for a softer, untangled appearance.

There Are DIY Lash Extensions

DIY lash extensions are considerably less of a hassle than having your lash extensions professionally done (especially over time). If you can have someone show you how the first time, and you pick it up, the process is fairly simple. So as you shop for DIY lash extensions you can look up tutorials on how to do it yourself. Always check that the seller is certified and up to code, you want a brand you can trust. Although it might seem like the less confident way to go, the right brand and seller of DIY lash extensions can actually be your best friend for your new beauty routine and look, without the price tag of the salon.

Salons And DIY Lash Extensions Can Be Customized

Lash extensions can be customized to each individual because no one’s eyes are exactly the same. You can customize the length, curl, width, color, shape, and style.

Conclusion

Lash extensions can easily become your new beauty trick addiction. The look is something you will wear day and night, everywhere you go. And over time you will almost feel as though they are a part of you (which they are, literally). Yes, lash extensions can be addictive, and for good reason. Keep in mind these tips as you go for your first appointment to be on your way to a brighter, bolder look.
