How To Unlock GM Radio With RDS

Theft is a real threat in the automotive world. That is why companies come up with new features that counter it. GM has not been left behind. They are the most innovative automotive company today.

Their Theftlock system is designed to lock the radio if the car battery is removed or disconnected from the car.

Although it is a necessary feature, it can be a source of inconvenience to vehicle owners. Not being able to use your radio is frustrating.

It is equally disheartening when you have no clue what to do about it. This article will explore the alternatives available.

How To Unlock A GM Radio With RDS

There are several ways to unlock a gm radio. Unfortunately, none of them will work on RDS components. In this case, you will not unlock the GM radio by yourself.

However, visit the nearest GM shop or dealership. They should be well equipped to unlock the radio. That is done manually, don’t call the dealership expecting a code.

How To Unlock Theftlock

Theftlock is a GM feature that has left many drivers impressed and frustrated at the same time. Although it deters theft, it leaves you without a source of entertainment if you rely on the radio.

Luckily, there are ways to bypass this without visiting a GM shop. Unless you are dealing with an RDS unit, you can unlock theft with a few tools. Follow the steps in three parts below:

1. Code retrieval

  • Turn on the radio

Turn on the car by inserting the key into the ignition, or select accessory mode to turn on the radio. If the radio is in Theftlock, the display should read LOC. Otherwise; the problem might require an authorized dealer shop.

  • Locate Radio ID Code

Preferably on a piece of paper, note down the ID codes. It is a three-digit number. To access the number, you have two options: press 2 and 3 or 1 and 4. Press either of the two sets of numbers simultaneously for at least 10 seconds.

Eventually, a 3 number will appear. Please write it down. Do not take longer than necessary. If 15 seconds is exceeded, the radio will reset. That means you will have to start from scratch.

These are the first three numbers you need. You will get the rest of them by pressing the AM/ FM button.

Arrange them correctly because a slight differentiation will cost you a do-over. Make sure to consult with GM before entering this series of numbers.

2. Calling GM for the code

  • Call 1-800-537-5140

That is the GM number that will help you in the process. Although it is an automated process, it is fairly easy. They will request the three numbers, plus the dealer’s access codes. They will give you a four-digit unlock code.

  • Dealers Access Codes

When they request a dealer’s access code, use 106010. Add # at the end to send it. There is a possible chance this access code might not work. Some dealers have different access codes in such a case using 620529, 139010, 206053, or 202308.

  • Write the code

Once you have sent the dealers access and the three sets of numbers, they will recite a code that you should write down. To avoid making the call again, listen carefully to the recited number. You will only have one chance, and they will not recite it again.

3. Enter the code

  • Use hour button

Use the time button used to set the time on the radio. Press it until you match the first two miners of the given code.

  • Use the minute button.

To set the last two numbers, use the minute button. Press this button until you find the last two digits of the code. Before proceeding, double-check that you have entered the correct code.

  • Press AM/FM button

Press the AM/FM button once you have confirmed the code. That will automatically open the radio and allow you to choose your preference like you normally would.

What To Do If The Process Flops?

Sometimes the process will not work. That is even after you have repeated the process. In cases like this, the best step is to make an appointment with the nearest GM store.

However, if you see INOP on display, leave the radio on for the next hour. INOP means the radio is inoperable. That could result from too many attempts at entering the code incorrectly.

Benefits Of Visiting An Auto Shop

Although it seems cheaper and convenient to work on the Theftlock yourself, it can be problematic in the long run. If you want to avoid mishaps, it is preferable to delegate the task to a professional on your vehicle.

1. Expertise

Dealership stores hire and train their employees. They are trained to hand in specific cars specifically. That ensures the work done on a vehicle is quality and standard.

They can easily identify the problem, unlike if you do a DIY or take it to local shops. That will save you time and other expenses that may arise from ‘misdiagnosis.’

2. Safeguarded

If there is one thing you can be sure of, dealership auto shops safeguard your vehicle when you entrust it to them. That means that if you take a car to them and the work is not done to your specifications, they will work on it again, free of charge. That is not so in local shops.

3. Warranty

Warranty is a great thing, especially in a dealer shop. The chances of paying for damages on a car under warranty are very slim. Warranties cover some of the costs, including unlocking Theftlock.

4. Appropriate tool

Another benefit of dealer shops is the appropriate tools for fixing whatever you need. No matter what is new in the industry, they are usually the first stock up in the shop. It is highly unlikely you will miss what is needed.

The Disadvantage Of Dealer Shops

Unfortunately, there is a downside to dealer shops. They may be appropriate to a certain extent, but they also come short.

1. Costly

Compared to local shops, dealers are much more expensive when the insurance company or warranty is not covering the complication. It’s something you can do quickly and easily, and it’s also inexpensive.

2. Personalized care

Although they save you from some hustles, dealers’ shops do not have the personal aspect of the business. They will treat you more like a statistic than a loyal customer. You will develop professional relationships with a personal touch with a local auto shop.

Types Of Dealerships

In most instances, it is recommended you visit a dealership to avoid more damages to your vehicle. However, not all dealerships are the same. Not all will give you the help you require. Here are the types of dealerships and how they work

New car dealers

This shop is specifically tailored to sell new cars and understands manufacturers to sell specific car brands.

You can find used cars in such dealerships as well. Even though they are not part of the normal inventory, they can be purchased as a trade-in for other vehicles.

Used car dealers

As the name states, such dealers exclusively sell used cars. They do not sell specific brands. Rather, they sell a variety of car brands at lower prices. That is the place to go if you need variety.

However, be prepared to lose out on the warranty and expert care from specific brand shops.

Used car stores

These dealers deal with a greater variety of used cars compared to their used car dealers counterparts. Their inventory is extensive, and you will likely find a car to fit your needs despite your budget.

Buying a car is fairly fast, and they accept trade-in. Don’t expect a personalized customer-dealer relationship in such stores. Their main focus is selling fast.

Virtual dealerships

Online stores are becoming more popular as time goes. Virtual dealerships are gaining momentum, just like most online stores. Customers can look through the inventory without leaving the comfort of their homes.

The variety is much more compared to physical shops. Customers order these cars and have them delivered to their doorsteps.

That being said, online shops suffer from downfalls as well. They lack the element of trust and personal touch that other stores have. All these dealerships have their advantages, but it is best to go to a brand-specific dealer to fix your car. It is the recommended way.

Conclusion

Radio Theftlock has revolutionized security measures related to vehicles. A battery disruption will lock out a thief from stealing the radio. However, it will also lock out the owner from enjoying much-needed entertainment.

This article has highlighted the steps to unlock a GM radio with RDS and generally unlocking Theftlock. You can accomplish it at home or in a local shop. Still, we recommend you visit a professional dealer shop. We hope this read will help you with all GM radio unlocking queries.
