Air Force Achievement Medal Ribbon
The Air Force Achievement Medal (AFAM) is a decoration granted to Air Force personnel for an overachievement in service, but not in the same vein that would qualify to earn the Commendation medal.
The Air Force Achievement Medal Ribbon is only given to junior personnel and is typically handed out to officers with the pay grade of O-4 and lower, as well as enlisted personnel beneath the grade of E-7.
Local commanders are authorized to give this award, which broadens the discretion when and for what action merits receiving this award.
The AFAM is considered to be the lower of the U.S. Military’s meritorious service medals and can be given in an area of combat but only for non-combat meritorious service.
The Air Force Achievement medal salutes the contributions of the junior officers and enlisted personnel who are not eligible for the higher Commendation Medal or the Meritorious Service Medal.
Air Force Aerial Achievement Medal Ribbon
Back in 1988, the U.S. Air Force formed the Air Force Aerial Achievement Medal (AFAAM), given to personnel for their contributions as in the aircrew; but these members are not qualified to earn the Air Medal.
The Air Force Aerial Achievement Medal Ribbon is presented in the name of the Secretary of the Air Force to members of the U.S. Military or civilian personnel, distinguished by meritorious achievement while in aerial flight during their service in the U.S. Air Force.
